Welcome to the POIES Library!!!!

My name is Jerri Fryar, and I am starting my 6th year as the librarian at POIES. I am very excited to be starting another year working with your students! It has been an amazing experience working with such a relatively small group of students and watching them grow and mature over the last few years.  Before coming to Isleta, I worked as a librarian and a classroom teacher at various high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools.  I very much consider myself a teaching librarian and work hard to try to prepare your students for academic and social success.

Each class at our elementary visits the library twice a week for book check-out and literacy related lessons. Library time is much more than just checking out books. As the librarian, I try to teach literacy skills so necessary for student success. I also try to support the curriculum standards for each grade level by finding ways to integrate my lessons with what is being taught in their classrooms.

When younger students come to the library, we read a story followed by an activity related to the story. We explore different types of literature, both fiction and non-fiction. I start to build a foundation for searching for information in a library.

As students become older, I try to build upon, and expand their literacy skills by integrating my lessons with various parts of their curriculum. I try to design lessons that encourage the growth of research skills that are so important in all areas of learning.

Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions concerning our library program at 869-2321, ext. 1213.
